Does your hot water situation have you screaming rather than singing in the shower? Your plumbing could be the problem.
We all know the water heater is the first place we look when there is not enough hot water in the shower, but your plumbing should not be counted out as a place to look when your shower is giving you the cold shoulder. A few plumbing issues to check include:
- Cross-connected pipes: If you have an older home, you may have a case of cross-connected pipes. Cross-connected pipes were once commonly used way to balance the flow of hot and cold water. If you have a hand-sprayer as part of your shower and it gets hot when the main shower is turned off, a cross connection may be to blame. This is not a simple DIY project, especially if you do not have access to the plumbing inside your bathroom wall. A professional plumber is what will do the trick in this scenario.
- Faucets:Your warm water problem could be in your entire house and not just in the shower. A quick test is to turn on all the hot faucets in your house and check them for how hot the water feels. If they start out scalding but cool quickly, you may have a faulty burner in your hot water heater. Another outcome of the faucet test is they don’t produce hot water at all. If this is the case, a faulty dip tube could be the problem. If the other faucets in your home give an okay stream of hot water, then there is definitely a problem with a shower component.
- Shower Valve:Your shower has a valve that blends the hot and cold water when you turn on your shower to give you that splendidly warm flow of water. In most cases, the O-rings or washers helping your valve be all it can be have worn out and now your shower valve doesn’t blend that water like it should anymore. You could even turn your valve all the way to the red and all you feel coming out is from the blue! This can be a DIY fix and most home supply stores carry the supplies you need.
