Should I Run My Air Conditioner’s Fan Continuously Or Use The “Auto” Setting On The Thermostat?

Griffin Heating and AC - Thursday, July 14, 2016

With the temperatures rising with the coming of summer, our minds are switching from how to keep the house warm and comfortable to ideas about how to keep it cool and comfortable. One of the major misconceptions folks have during this transition is that it is better to run their air-conditioning fan continuously as opposed to hitting the “auto” setting on your home’s thermostat. The reality is however, in the on/auto debate over which method is more efficient, the results are in and it can be categorically stated that the “auto” feature is the more cost effective way to cool down your home this summer.

The role of the A/C fan is to circulate air, either hot or cold, throughout your home during the day. Leaving it “on” all the time means that rather than shutting off when the temperature reaches its desired setting, your A/C fan will keep working long after the air-conditioner has completed its task.

Since a typical air-conditioning unit cycles off approximately 30% of the time, that means the fan will continue to chug on for an additional 200 hours each billing cycle. Equally important to consider, the longer your A/C unit continuously operates, the more susceptible it is to breaking down from wear and tear.

Getting ahead of the summer heat is easy when you know how to use your home’s air-conditioning settings. Using your A/C unit with an eye on energy efficiency translates into turning your air-conditioning fan from the “on” to the “auto” setting
